What is school wide PBIS?
One of the foremost advances in school wide discipline is the emphasis on school-wide systems of support that are positive, proactive, and include strategies for teaching appropriate behaviors. The goal of this program is to create a positive school environment where students are taught explicit positive behaviors. Contemplate for a moment what do the world's best managers do differently? They create environments where employees:
1. Know what is expected
2. Have the materials and equipment to do the job correctly.
3. Receive recognition each week for good work
4. Have a supervisor who cares, and pays attention
5. Receive encouragement to contribute and improve
6. Can identify a person at work who is a “best friend.”
7. Feel the mission of the organization makes them feel like their jobs are important
8. See the people around them committed to doing a good job
9. Feel like they are learning new things (getting better)
10. Have the opportunity to do their job well.
Through PBIS we aim to create a clear and focused environment at Fuller Street that mimics the environment described above. One of the main components of PBIS is introducing a school wide motto that enforces the behavior expectations of our school. Fuller Street has chosen “ROAR”.
R-Respectful
O-Orderly/Safe
A-Assistive
R-Responsible
Teachers reinforce PBIS for students by demonstrating these behavior expectations, and are also proactively teaching these behaviors and what they look like in different areas around campus including the classrooms, cafeteria, hallway, gym, and playground. Our students will earn tickets when they are witnessed demonstrating these behaviors.
PBIS at Home
Positive Behavior Interventions & Support can easily be implemented in your home as well. You can decide on three to five positive behavior expectations that you would like your son/daughter to improve and begin teaching those expectations in each area of your home. For example, what does respect look like at the dinner table, in the car, or at bed time? While your son/daughter is learning these specific behaviors, reward them with a meaningful reinforcement. Keeping a positive environment at home can also help change unwanted behaviors. At Fuller Street we will attempt to adhere to a 5:1 positive/correction ratio. For every one correction we give our students, they receive five positive interactions. Research has proven that positive interaction can help decrease undesirable behavior.
PBIS will be fun at Fuller St. and can easily be integrated into your home. For more information on the PBIS program please contact the Fuller St. office staff, or submit your question by using the contact page on this website.
